NEW WOMEN AUTEURS OF CONTEMPORARY WORLD CINEMA
This winter, join Guest Curator Jacqueline Lyanga, Global Cinematheque’s Founder and Artistic Director for a spotlight on auteur women of contemporary world cinema. This free public screening series features women filmmakers who each bring their own distinct point-of-view, visual and narrative style to the art form of moving pictures and evolve the representation of women in cinema. This series will open on January 9 with the Mexican film TÓTEM from Lila Avilés at the Vidiots Foundation Eagle Theater at 7pm.

In a bustling Mexican household, seven-year-old Sol is swept up in a whirlwind of preparations for the birthday party for her father, Tona, led by her mother, aunts and other relatives. As the day goes on, building to an event both anticipated and dreaded, Sol begins to understand the gravity of the celebration this year and watches as her family does the same. This poignant and emotionally expansive film from Lila Avilés (The Chambermaid) cements her skill at directing dynamic ensemble performances in her stunning sophomore effort. Tótem had its world premiere at the 2023 Berlin International Film Festival and was Mexico’s official entry for the Oscar’s Best International Feature Film category.

This impressive feature directorial debut from British-Nigerian playwright Adura Onashile premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition.

Lydia, a midwife highly invested in her career, is going through a bad break-up that is making her feel like she has lost control of her life. Yet, when her pregnant best friend Salomé asks her to monitor her pregnancy, she cannot refuse, and neither of them is prepared for the turbulent emotional journey that they are about to embark on. Kaltenbäck’s first feature deftly explores and unravels the mythologies of motherhood and sisterhood with the influence of filmmakers Kelly Reichardt and Lucrecia Martel on display. The Rapture had its world premiere at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival as part of the Critics Week (Semaine de la Critique) program where it won the SACD (Authors Society) Award.
