All but two of the winning and runner-up film titles from this year’s awards honoring the films of 2019 can now be viewed online in the U.S. through streaming services and virtual cinemas. The goal of this new list from Global Cinematheque is to give more exposure to the extraordinary international talent working on each of these films. So, we hope that this list is a starting point that leads you to watch these films for the first, second or third time, and that it inspires you to dig deeper into the filmography of each of these brilliant artists to catch up on the films of theirs that you still haven’t seen.
Parasite was the big winner in several categories winning best Global Narrative, and topping the Director, Screenplay, Cinematography, Editing and Score categories; also Song Kang-Ho was a 2nd runner-up in the Actor category.
Portrait of a Lady on Fire’s lead actresses Adèle Haenel and Noémie Merlant tied to win the Actress category and director Céline Sciamma was 2nd in the Director category, right after director Bong Joon Ho. Portrait of a Lady on Fire was also 2nd in the Cinematography and Editing categories and came in 3rd for the Score from Jean-Baptiste de Laubier and Arthur Simonini.
Portrait of a Lady on Fire’s cinematographer Claire Mathon took both the 2nd and 3rd runner-up slots for that film and Atlantics, and for this, she was also celebrated with a World Cinema Spotlight Award for Craft.
Joanna Hogg, writer and director of The Souvenir received a Spotlight Award for Creative Vision and first time feature director Mati Diop, writer/director of Atlantics was celebrated with a Spotlight Award for Discovery.
Antonio Banderas’ performance in Pain and Glory took top honors in the best Actor category, and Pedro Almodóvar was a runner up in directing. Pain and Glory was also a runner-up in the Screenplay, Editing and Score categories.
Beanpole and Synonyms each was a runner up in one category. Actor Tom Mercier for Synonyms and actress Viktoria Miroshnichenko for Beanpole.
And in the Animation category, I Lost My Body was the winner. The Swallows of Kabul and Weathering with You were the runner-ups.
Honeyland led the Global Documentary category, with For Sama and The Cave following in 2nd and 3rd place.
